Join the Green Army: Volunteer Event with AMD

Thursday, October 4 8:00AM -10:00AM
Waller Creek

Summary

Environmental conferences can do a lot to advance sustainability, but usually they don’t produce a tangible environmental benefit in the community during the conference itself. AMD has worked with SXSW Eco staff to transform part of this year’s agenda (8-10am on Oct 4th) into a BIG volunteer and unique networking event that should yield real benefits.

SXSW ECO attendees are encouraged to RSVP for this “Green Army” event on October 4th from 8-10am. Up to 120 registered volunteers will clean and beautify Austin’s historic Waller Creek, through the University of Texas campus, by planting trees, gathering debris, and identifying invasive species. Plus, we’ll make “seed-balls” for the Bastrop Lost Pines Recovery Project! RSVP now to confirm your spot: http://sxsw_greenarmy.eventbrite.com

To expand this effort, AMD is working with Keep Austin Beautiful and several other organizations on additional spin-off events for Green Army volunteers from the general public as well as local employers like AMD, Dell, Whole Foods, and more. The goal is for hundreds of volunteers to beautify Waller Creek through central Austin and all-the-way down to the
Colorado River (i.e., Lady Bird Lake). Then volunteers will meet up around 6pm for a reception at the EasyTiger bakery and bar (709 East 6th Street) overlooking Waller Creek to relax and reflect on our work. Voluntary donations collected at the event will benefit the Waller Creek Conservancy.

“We are excited to introduce this concept at SXSW Eco and hope it sets a new precedent for large sustainability conferences. It’s a win-win opportunity to leave the host community with a valuable ecological and societal benefit, while providing unique networking experiences for attendees,” says AMD’s Director of Corporate Responsibility, Tim Mohin.
