Mitch Jacobson
Austin Technology Incubator - Dir

The IEA estimates $13.5 trillion needs to be invested in low carbon technologies between now and 2050 to implement the climate investment pledges made to the UN by world leaders. This is not an insignificant funding gap, and current investment and financing mechanisms are insufficient. Because traditional venture capital is often not a “fit” for early stage cleantech (renewable energy, water, energy efficiency, transportation/mobility and waste/re-use) companies, family foundations and institutional investors can have a significant impact in the startup community.

Mitch Jacobson and Kathleen Baireuther of the Austin Technology Incubator will lead a discussion about how new partnerships can play a critical role in addressing the funding gap for cleantech startups. How can incubators play a role in providing distinctive, vetted investment opportunities to funders that are new to the cleantech investing space? How the conversation around mission-related and program-related investing lead to the creation of novel partnerships among family offices, foundations, and startup ecosystems, such that new sources of “patient capital” are invested in novel technologies that will play an essential role in addressing climate change?
