Summary

Hear from the founders of two of the leading energy storage startups on how their batteries are enabling a more efficient grid. With combined funding totaling over $250M and backers including Bill Gates, Kleiner Perkins, Shell and Goldman Sachs, these companies are already delivering their services to utilities and customers around the world. Through the use of saltwater-based electrolytes, Dr. Jay Whitacre and his team at Aquion Energy have created the first Cradle to Cradle Certified™ batteries, which provide long-duration, renewable energy “time shifting,” on or off-grid. Mike Hopkins, CEO of Ice Energy, leads a team that created thermal “ice batteries,” filled with fresh water. The ice, which freezes overnight, provides cooling during times of peak demand, using only 5% of the power required to run a traditional AC compressor. Listen as these leaders discuss the future of energy storage, the challenges they face working to transform the industry and the trends and tech they are most excited about.
