Quick Bio

Mariana Amatullo, PhD, is a practitioner-scholar and the Co-Founder and Vice President of Designmatters at ArtCenter College of Design, Pasadena, where she has overseen a portfolio of educational and research collaborations in design and social innovation since establishing the award-winning program in 2001 with a college-wide task force. Amatullo is a recipient of the inaugural DELL Social Innovation Education Award (2012); in 2013 she conceived the biennial LEAP symposium that investigates emerging career pathways in design for social innovation. Amatullo serves on the executive board of Cumulus, the International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media; is a founding member of the advisory board of, and lectures internationally about design and social innovation. She is the lead editor of LEAP Dialogues: Career Pathways in Design for Social Innovation (DAP, 2016) a publication that brings together 84 practitioners, educators and researchers who are shaping the field of design for social innovation in the United States. She received her PhD in Management from the Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Reserve University in 2015. She is presently a Scholar-in-Residence at the Weatherhead School where her research focuses on the impact of design in social innovation and organizational practice. She holds an M.A. in Art History and Museum Studies from the University of Southern California, and a Licence en Lettres Degree from the Sorbonne University, Paris.
